Emerging Trends in Food and Drink

Over the last year a wide range of food and drink trends have appeared reflecting our changing attitudes towards health, the environment and the ethical impact of our food choices. The rise of veggie and vegan cuisine has turned the emphasis to vegetables more than ever. Long gone are the boiled carrots, broccoli and cauliflower side dishes. Now we are seeing sides of interesting vegetable combinations, all tossed together with oils, dressings, and the added crunch and texture of toasted seeds and nuts. Mixing different vegetables together also adds diversity and flavour to the side dish. We love Yotam Ottolenghi, he makes vegetables taste amazing! Granted his recipes are complex with lots of ingredients but they are well worth the effort. Better still, eat in his restaurants or delis. Eating veggie or vegan needn’t be boring, planning and thinking a little more about the dish can be very rewarding.

It’s seeming that there will be a much bigger push towards more people opting for plant based eating, rather than meat. Gluten free options are also becoming more and more popular. In recent years, we have been watching documentaries and seeing the celebrity culture opting for this type of diet and speaking out about it, spreading the word of the health benefits, gut feeling, weight loss and general well being when they cut out meat and or dairy. We are also experiencing an avocado craze, the health benefits are huge and now well known. Breakfast and brunch is now a massive trend with avocado appearing on every menu, if not every dish.

Burgers have been massive everywhere recently and are definitely in fashion when it comes to food. We are also seeing a huge rise in the meat free variety. This opens up the relaxed, casual dining option to our veggie and vegan friends too. Almost every eating establishment now has a burger on the menu, regardless of how prestigious or basic it is. This is because of how popular they have become.

There are certainly more innovative ways to eat healthier. It was most probably Hollywood, LA that started us Brits off with these healthy or vegan diets. We are also now eating hyper local, we are aware of eating foods that are local and in season and love to know where exactly they are grown or farmed and feel a sense of satisfaction knowing we are helping out local farmers and grocers in the process. We are turning our backs on the supermarkets that took over the market and stole business from our agricultural workers. We are loving organic eating and knowing our meat is local and the animals are grass fed.

Another trend is alcohol free spirits, wines and beers. Although they actually don’t taste dissimilar to alcoholic drinks and they are are good for pregnant women and drivers to still feel they are joining in, but in our opinion there is no substitute for the real deal as nothing gives you that sense of relaxation or helps to let your hair down the way that alcohol does- Fact!
